We’re thrilled to introduce the Oak Meadow Stingrays Swim Team as our newest Shafer Cool Kid! This spirited team of young swimmers, ages 5 to 18, approaches every practice and meet with dedication, sportsmanship, and a strong sense of community.
Based at the Oak Meadow Swim Club in Northern San Antonio, the Stingrays are more than just a summer swim team. They are a close-knit group of athletes who support each other, grow in confidence, and have a blast in the water.
Led by a passionate group of coaches, many of whom are former Stingrays themselves, the team focuses on stroke fundamentals, teamwork, and having fun. Whether it’s their first swim meet or a championship race, these kids give it their all, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate them.
The Stingrays were founded in 1980, and between 100 and 120 kids participate every year! Cameron Vickrey, Swim Team Coordinator for the Stingrays, told us a bit about what it’s like to be involved:
“The best part about being a Stingray is the way the older swimmers take care of the younger ones, and how the younger ones look up to the older ones. It’s a very tight knit community, and our coaches were all little Stingrays at one time. It’s so fun to see the friendships between the kids and the coaches. We definitely have something special!”
She went on to say that, because of our sponsorship, they were able to hire a legacy Stingray as a junior coach (and her goal is to become a head coach one day!). They also were promoted from Division C to Division B this year, and they won three out of four dual meets they participated in!
Way to go, Stingrays! You truly represent what it means to be a Shafer Cool Kid.
