Sometimes, it’s a simple fix. Other times, you need an expert. To save you time and money, we’re sharing a few HVAC troubleshooting tips.
Reset your HVAC system
When your HVAC system has a glitch, you can restart it just like you restart your computer when something is amiss. All systems are different, so you’ll want to check your owner’s manual for instructions. Owner’s manuals can also be found online. Just search for your system’s model number.
Change your filter
Yup, sometimes the trouble is something as simple as replacing your filter. You can tell this is a problem if your system has not been cooling well, air from your vents is humid or dusty, or you have deferred maintenance.
Determine if your thermostat is working
Surprisingly, thermostats are often the cause of many HVAC problems. A faulty thermostat can lead your system to turn on and off at the wrong times or not at all. First, make sure your thermostat has power. If it is battery operated, try switching the batteries. Once power is confirmed, double check all of your settings.
Check your vents
Make sure your vents are open and that they are free from dust and any objects that could be obstructing airflow. It’s a simple but important step.
Turn off the AC
During heat waves, older units can freeze if they have been on for an extended amount of time. Conversely, this keeps them from cooling properly. Try turning off your AC and turn on the fan for a while before using it again.
Check Furnace and AC Wires
Wires can become damaged or disconnected, especially for outside units that may be cut by landscaping equipment. It never hurts to check, but be sure not to handle any damaged wires!
