Water Softeners – What to know before installing one

Do you need a water softener? If so, which is the best model for you and what should you consider before installing it? Shafer Services Plus is here to help you evaluate whether or not this is the right purchase for you, ensuring that you get exactly what you need.

What is hard water?

Hardness is defined as the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water, which is expressed in terms of calcium carbonate.

The good news?

Calcium Carbonate in San Antonio’s water is naturally occurring as water moves through soil and rock from the Edwards and the Trinity Aquifers. The National Academy of Sciences states that hard drinking water generally contributes a small amount toward total calcium and magnesium human dietary needs.

The bad news?

Hard water can shorten the life of your appliances; build-up of minerals (scale) on the inside of pipes, fixtures, and hot water heaters; shorten the life of your clothes and fabrics; create mineral spots on glassware; and enable soap films and detergent curds in sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines.

Do you need a water softener?

Any easy rule of thumb is that you should consider a water softener if your water’s hardness is greater than 7 GPG (grains per gallon). Shafer Services Plus can asses water quality, purity, and hardness.

How do you pick the right water softener?

Start by determining your hard water level. San Antonio’s hard water ranges from 15 to 20 GPG. This is important to know because water softener models are designed to treat different levels of hard water. Meanwhile, Shafer is on-hand to evaluate your home’s individual water hardness.

Next, calculate how much water you use. Water softening capabilities are referred to as grain capacity, with a number in the 10s of thousands. You will usually see this number in conjunction with a model number. This helps ensure that you purchase a system with enough softening capacity for your entire home. How do you calculate your water usage? If you have two or less bathrooms and/or three or less people residing in your home, you need a 20,000+ grain capacity water softener. If you have three or more bathrooms and/or four or four or more people in your home, you need a 30,000+ grain capacity water softener.

How much do water softeners cost?

Quality systems with installation can cost as little as $43 per month with financing from Shafer Services Plus. Our promise to you is to perform the correct water softener installation service at an honest price
